Since 1992, three series of works that deal with the lure and ridiculousness of war have occupied me. The first series, inspired by the Gulf War is “War Toys.” These are a flock of 28 comically aggressive machines with wheels and clumsy movement. I made them small, to give the viewer a sense of Olympian detachment. They are both seductively interesting and inviting to play with. The second series, War Toys Redux, continues the concerns of the first series. These “toys” which now include glass elements bring to mind bioterror. As in the earlier series, these sculptures are small and are intended to please, provoke, and continue to address war as society’s ongoing preoccupation.
